In late October, FromSoftware gave fans an unpleasant surprise. The developers suddenly shut down the servers for Dark Souls II as well as Dark Souls III across all platforms.
Soon after, a notification appeared on FromSoftware’s social media account. The developers explained that the shutdown was linked to a certain “malfunction.”
Due to a malfunction detected on the game servers, we are suspending server operations across all platforms. As soon as the restoration schedule is determined, we will make a follow-up announcement. We apologize to players for any inconvenience caused.
Multiplayer in Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III is now unavailable indefinitely. Players suspect that hackers may have discovered new vulnerabilities in the security systems.
A few days ago, FromSoftware had already performed server maintenance for Dark Souls II. There appear to be no issues with multiplayer in Elden Ring—players have not raised complaints yet.
Some FromSoftware fans remember all too well how a few years ago a critical vulnerability was found in Dark Souls multiplayer, which allowed arbitrary code execution on PC players’ machines.
