Is Activision preparing the return of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? Unexpected classification discovered

The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could return to modern platforms with enhanced visuals and multiplayer, as hinted by a new classification of the game in Australia.

The Australian age rating classification organization has issued a new rating for Modern Warfare 2, which was released 17 years ago. Specific platforms are not specified: the project is simply listed as a “computer game.” Similar documents often surface shortly before official announcements.

The situation resembles the recent classification of the first two Call of Duty: Black Ops titles, after which Activision released versions of them for modern consoles. Those were not full-fledged remakes or remasters, but ports with some improvements for PS5 and PS4.

The Modern Warfare 2 campaign already received an update in 2020, and back then the original multiplayer was not included in the re-release. The new classification mentions online interactivity and chat, which may point to the return of the multiplayer mode.
