Skyblivion creators threatened with lawsuit — ex-developer demands home addresses of project leads

One of the project contributors is outraged over the decompilation of his code.

The creators of Skyblivion—a fan remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion powered by the TES V: Skyrim engine—recently faced the threat of a lawsuit. The claims came not from the lawyers at Bethesda Game Studios, but from one of the project's former contributors.

The TES Renewal Project team released a statement regarding the situation, explaining that the disagreement stemmed from the decompilation of code written by a former volunteer. According to the modders, this was a necessary step to keep the project functioning.

Following his departure from the project, multiple discussions were held regarding the continued use and maintenance of his work. The main point of contention centered on his objections to the decompilation of specific parts of his code—a step our team was forced to take in order to maintain and bugfix systems already integrated into the project after access to the source code repository was revoked.

However, according to the TES Renewal Project, they were unable to resolve the dispute, and the individual “turned to threatening legal action.” He also “demanded the real names and home addresses of the volunteer leadership team.”

The project members noted that a “take my ball and go home” mindset contradicts the open, collaborative spirit of the modding community. They have already consulted with legal counsel and are confident in their right to use the individual's code. Nevertheless, in order to “protect volunteers from unnecessary stress and put this matter to rest once and for all,” they decided to rebuild and improve the existing systems.

The TES Renewal Project team also asked fans to remain respectful toward all parties involved in the conflict:

Regardless of how this conflict has developed behind the scenes, we still wish this former volunteer the best and hope to resolve the situation as soon as possible and proceed with the planned release of Skyblivion.

The creators of Skyblivion have not yet announced a specific release date for the project. The fan remake is expected to potentially launch in 2027.
