Recently, Rockstar Games revealed pre-load details for Grand Theft Auto VI and clarified the game's file size. It turned out to be slightly larger than initially assumed — the announced pre-load size is up to 212 GB (depending on the target platform). Earlier, dataminer PlayStation Game Size reported that the game would take around 210 GB on PlayStation 5.
Players noticed a comment from dataminer Tex2, well known in the Red Dead Redemption and GTA communities. According to him, the size of Grand Theft Auto VI could have exceeded 400 GB (this is a hypothetical figure).
The developers were able to keep GTA VI's file size within acceptable limits thanks to proprietary technology. Earlier during a discussion, Tex2 cited the file size of GTA V Enhanced as an example of optimization:
Rockstar Games switched to the MP3 format for audio in GTA V Enhanced. The GTA V audio package size decreased from around 16 to 8 GB, and the DLC package from around 66 to 51 GB. Without all this compression, VI could easily take up more than 400 GB.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. There is no information about the PC version of the game yet: some users fear that the game might take up more space than the console versions.
