Take-Two CEO admits: GTA VI will be pirated, and the company is preparing for it

Strauss Zelnick admitted that GTA VI will inevitably be pirated. The company is prepared to combat the illegal distribution of the game through technical means and in court.

During an interview at the WSJ Tech event, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that piracy is an inevitable part of the entertainment industry that has to be reckoned with. As an example, he cited the film industry, where illegal copies accounted for 10% to 20% of the market. In the music industry in the mid-2000s, this figure reached 80%, although it subsequently declined significantly.

According to Zelnick, pirates in the gaming industry face additional obstacles. The large file size of modern games and hardware complexity complicate illegal distribution. Regular updates from developers also create extra challenges for those attempting to run pirated versions.

At the same time, Take-Two does not intend to leave the situation unaddressed. Zelnick warned that the company is prepared to implement additional technical protection measures and, in the event of large-scale piracy, take legal action.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
