DOOM meets Call of Duty: Zombies. Sony shuts down development of unusual shooter

Details of the cancelled Dark Outlaw Games shooter codenamed Ignite, which combined ideas from DOOM and Call of Duty, have been revealed online.

YouTube blogger Glitching Queen published a 22-minute investigation on November 5. It details a project by Dark Outlaw Games, a PlayStation-owned studio that cancelled development of the game earlier this year. The team was creating a dark fantasy action game with elements of Call of Duty: Zombies.

However, many details remained behind the scenes due to the strict non-disclosure agreements PlayStation is known for. The author of Insider Gaming also reported that since the project's cancellation, he has been collecting materials about it for a book on unreleased games. He has acquired gigabytes of screenshots, videos, and documents.

Ignite was heavily inspired by DOOM Eternal. It was a linear, story-driven project with distinct levels, cinematic scenes, and scripted events. In scale and structure, the locations resembled Call of Duty. A co-op mode was also planned.

One of the main features was a dismemberment system: the player needed to deal as much damage to enemies as possible to fuel an amulet that restored health and powered up the character. The enemy model consisted of layers of skin, muscle, and bone that were destroyed depending on the weapon used or melee attacks.

The developers also included hordes of enemies, Easter eggs, and mini-games in the vein of Call of Duty: Zombies. The project was cancelled due to a review of PlayStation's budget and reallocation of funds amid gaming market challenges.
