It seems that this method of monetizing multiplayer games is becoming increasingly popular today, as a similar statement regarding the MMOG Star Wars: The Old Republic was made at yesterday’s shareholders meeting by the head of EA, John Riccitiello.

“We continue to use various monetization models in MMOGs, such as microtransactions and monthly subscriptions,” he stated. “The recently released Warhammer Online is an example of that. In the case of Star Wars: The Old Republic, we will focus on a micro-payment system, which should help popularize the game.”

EA promises to reveal all the details about this at the company’s February shareholders meeting.
