The game begins when the world was still normal. The player is allowed to enjoy a concert by a band performing a farewell tour. This moment will become a vivid memory, as everything changed afterwards. A phenomenon called "Silence" will become the cause of the old civilization's demise.
Art was blamed for all the troubles, and music was declared the main enemy. To fight the "Silence," the H.A.R.M. organization was created, whose employees destroy instruments and put musicians in prison.
In the new world, there is no place for creativity, but this does not stop a girl named Beat. At the beginning, she tries to assemble a musical group of young like-minded people. The already formed group must find food and shelter before it becomes possible to organize concerts for a diverse audience – in a dystopia, you won't have much of a choice.
Because of H.A.R.M., the main characters constantly have to be on the run – in each episode, they settle in a new place. The player has several days during which they can explore the surroundings. This allows you to enjoy colorful views of nature or semi-abandoned cities. While exploring locations, Beat can stand still and just soak in the moment.
Each day is divided into time periods during which rhythm-based mini-games are active. You can help a girl jump rope, serve drinks in a bar, or paint over H.A.R.M. propaganda. A common mini-game involves hitting baseballs.
Most mini-games share the fact that they are fun and broken. A perfect example is billiards, where you traditionally need to sink balls into pockets. Due to strange physics, it will take a long time to adapt, and nearby balls can be scattered with the cue without even making a shot. In the end, I spent about thirty minutes on this completely optional side activity.
In their free time, the characters talk to each other. They discuss pressing issues such as "where will we take cover?" or "what will we eat tomorrow?". Esoteric questions in the style of "what awaits us in the future?" or "what is the meaning of our existence?" are also popular. The game has a huge amount of small talk that brilliantly reveals the characters.
In most cases, plot progression ends with concerts that will delight the player with excellent music and songs. Silence arrives at the concerts, which is associated with a separate mini-game – you need to press buttons to beat back approaching monsters to the rhythm. On high difficulty, this is a quite manageable task, while the maximum difficulty will make you sweat.
Fights with H.A.R.M. forces are similar – you need to press buttons in time to hit the attackers. The difference is that this mini-game is more unpolished, which is why some animations may not play. Periodically, these mechanics combine — then you have to fight off both monsters and people.
Many segments involve epic chases where you need to jump over obstacles and dodge enemy fire. No less epic are the main story cutscenes, where the heroes participate in large brawls or escape from a huge monster.
The overall impression is spoiled by an insane camera that can show anything but the location of the main characters. Because of it, it's easy to get lost during walks or lose in a mini-game where you need to jump on car roofs. Due to the habit of changing angles, the camera becomes the main source of difficulty in fights.
After completing the story, you can entertain yourself with an arcade mode. In it, the game allows you to replay mini-games by choosing the difficulty and aiming for the best score.
Diagnosis
In terms of the level of madness and chaos, UNBEATABLE resembles the anime FLCL. The game has many epic moments where the heroes significantly exceed human capabilities. But the main focus is on the development of the characters as individuals and finding their place in life. And this element is executed perfectly!
The game was released in an unpolished state and it is unknown when it will be fixed, but even now the existing problems are not enough to spoil the pleasure of playing. It is visible to the naked eye that the developers worked hard to create a wonderful atmosphere that allows you to relax and think about life.
This atmosphere not only saves the game but also leaves a pleasant aftertaste.
