Freedom and Fun: 7 Analogues to the Great Dark Messiah of Might and Magic

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. This project from Arkane Studios had a significant impact on the development of the gaming industry, elevating player interaction with game worlds to a new level. We decided to compile a selection of projects that can be considered successors to the legendary action game.

Fatekeeper

A role-playing game from the developers at Paraglacial studio. You will play as a representative of an ancient order of druids in a dark fantasy world that has suffered from ancient cataclysms.

This small world is full of various ruins, dungeons, forests, and forgotten sanctuaries where you can happily get lost. And a flexible leveling system will allow you to become a warrior in heavy armor with a huge hammer, a pyromancer, an alchemist, or create a universal build combining all these possibilities.

Fighting in the game is fun — the emphasis is on physics and using the environment: enemies can be thrown, slammed against walls, pushed off cliffs, and so on. Although the duels are not as frantic as in Dark Messiah, they are more tactical and deep, which is also interesting.

The project is still in early access, and the game content lasts about four hours. However, the full version promises to grow to 15 hours.

Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon

Questline studio's project sends players into a grim version of the King Arthur legends, 600 years after his death. This world suffers from a consuming blight, creating its own lingering and oppressive atmosphere.

The story campaign is branching and rich, and in addition to it, there are hundreds of side quests, sometimes as well-developed as the main storyline. All of this is well-staged and voiced.

Combat in the game is based on light and heavy attacks, blocks, parries, and dodges. You will have a wide arsenal of weapons at your disposal: one-handed and two-handed, shields, bows, spells, as well as various potions and consumable items.

Great attention is paid to experimenting with different playstyles and using the environment: you can become an agile archer, a powerful mage, a summoner, or create a hybrid style. For example, a warrior-mage or an archer striking from the shadows.

Elderborn

This role-playing game from the Polish studio Hyperstrange is set in the scenery of a cursed ancient city and possesses its unique charm. It's a first-person slasher where you must brutally punish hordes of enemies to a powerful heavy metal soundtrack.

Battles combine dynamic melee combat with elements of the "souls-like" genre: there's the signature difficulty, free character progression, deep exploration, and harsh punishment for mistakes. You'll face brutal clashes where timing is crucial, various weapons, blocks, dodges, and those familiar kicks well-known to Dark Messiah fans. Enemies can be thrown, pushed into abysses, slammed against the environment — a combat sandbox in all its glory, bringing a lot of fun!

As you progress, you improve your character, master different types of weapons and combat styles, unlock new techniques, and uncover the lore. The game doesn't have a huge skill tree, but each style feels unique.

Avowed

This action RPG transports us to the fantasy world of Eora, already familiar to Pillars of Eternity fans. The player controls a Godlike — a being marked by an unknown deity even before birth. As an emissary of the mighty Aedyr Empire, you travel to the Living Lands region to investigate the mysterious Dream Scourge — a magical plague that drives people mad and corrupts reality itself.

The leveling system in Avowed is very flexible and doesn't tie you to a class. Do you want to become a warrior with a two-handed sword? Or do you prefer to shoot a musket? Or perhaps you enjoy magic? Or do you want to stage the most unusual akimbo shooting, holding a pistol in one hand and a magic wand in the other? The game doesn't limit you in any way... Except for the stamina system, which needs to be controlled, and enemy healers, who should be eliminated first.

Tactics are important in the heat of battle: freeze an enemy, then smash them with a sword? Easy! Use fire to burn webs, or freeze the surface of water to create a bridge? Why not? Throw enemies off cliffs or drive them into traps — the environment will become your best friend and unleash the potential of your imagination!

Arx Fatalis

The predecessor to Dark Messiah was Arkane Studios' debut project called Arx Fatalis. In this world, the sun has already gone out, and the remnants of civilization have taken refuge in huge underground caves. The main character wakes up in a goblin prison cell, having lost his memory.

You will have to escape and find yourself in the thick of events, and save the remnants of civilization from Akbaa — a sinister god of destruction. And what comes of it depends on you, because the player is free to join any side of the conflict, which affects the ending.

The gameplay is spiced with RPG elements and balances between exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat. Character progression doesn't tie you to a class and allows you to develop your character by combining the skills of a warrior, archer, mage, or thief. And in combat, everything has to be carefully calculated: for example, by dodging an enemy attack at the right time, you can hold down the attack button, empowering it, and deal devastating damage to your opponent.

The magic system is also captivating. If you want to cast spells, instead of choosing a spell from a menu, you'll have to draw runes in the air with your mouse, like a real wizard. It's difficult, but atmospheric, and allows you to experiment by combining found runes to unlock new spells.

Gloomwood

In this stealth horror game, you play as an unnamed doctor who finds himself in a gloomy Victorian city engulfed by a mysterious curse. He wants to escape this trap, for which he will have to explore every corner of it: streets, tunnels, and mansions. All to uncover the sinister secret hidden in the fog.

The game world is compact but meticulously detailed. Levels have many paths, hidden passages, and useful shortcuts. And the gameplay is based on stealth, where lighting and sound play a key role: they can and should be used to your advantage. The doctor's arsenal includes a cane-sword for silent kills, as well as a revolver and a shotgun, which are best saved for critical moments, as ammunition is scarce. The environment will also be your friend: throw bottles to distract or blow up barrels to set an ambush.

The project has been in early access since September 2022 and is actively developing. The developers regularly add new areas, making the gaming experience better and better with each update.

Prey

Another masterpiece from Arkane Studios, throwing us into an alternate world. Here, the USSR encountered the alien Typhon race and created a huge orbital station, "Talos-1." You'll have to unravel its mysteries when the Typhons arrive.

Character progression allows you to develop human skills — hacking, repairing, increasing strength and health — or implant Typhon abilities: shapeshifting, teleportation, lifting enemies into the air, or taking control of them.

Combat in the game is a survival puzzle where tactics, environment, and unconventional solutions are crucial. You can freeze opponents, create improvised bridges, or block doors. Enemies can be thrown from heights, pitted against each other, or turned into resources using recycler grenades.

Or you can sneak, bypass, hack a door, or use a toy crossbow to press a button from afar. Your creativity, the environment, and advanced physics are your best friends!
