Anita Sarkeesian, who devoted her life to fighting the patriarchy and critiquing female representation in video games, has announced the closure of her website and the winding down of all projects under the Feminist Frequency organization. In an interview with Polygon, the activist attributed the decision to exhaustion.
“I'm shutting it all down because I'm burned out. This can't be fixed by taking a vacation. I just can't do this anymore.”
On the Feminist Frequency YouTube channel, Sarkeesian's team regularly published videos discussing not only games allegedly featuring too many overtly sexualized female characters, but also critiquing toxic masculinity in movies.
Cynics believe that the shutdown of Feminist Frequency, which was truly essential to the entertainment industry, is tied to the fact that with 240 thousand subscribers on YouTube, the organization's videos average just 1 to 3 thousand views, and only 246 people support the project on Patreon, with it being unlikely that all of them are “Patriarchy Smashers” donating $25 a month to Feminist Frequency.
