Once, after working on the Kirby series games, the HAL Laboratory team decided to create a prototype of an interesting idea and pitch it to Nintendo. The idea was to make not an ordinary fighting game, but one that could be played simultaneously by up to four people and would be friendly even to the youngest players. That is how Super Smash Bros. was born, completely changing Nintendo’s perspective. Why? The leadership of the Japanese corporation stopped fearing unconventional uses of its characters and discovered a new genre.
The platform fighter genre is now one of the most popular and, along with Super Smash Bros., has spawned several successful imitators, such as Brawlhalla and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2. Games in the series have been purchased almost 75 million times, making it one of the 50 most profitable brands in the entire history of the video game industry.
