Game designer Aaron Nielsen, who worked on Warcraft 3: Reforged and Sea of Thieves, proposed to his sweetheart using the Playdate handheld console.
Nielsen used the Pulp editor to work on the project, which was originally intended to be a simple platformer but then turned into a letter-delivery arcade game called Love Letter.
“After a few playtests, I pivoted to an arcade high-score based experience,” — shared Nielsen.
In the final version of Nielsen's arcade game, the player needs to try to deliver as many letters as possible before the timer runs out.
“At the end of the game, the collected letters would form the sentence: ‘Will you marry me?’ — and that was my cue to get down on one knee. Oh, and don't worry, if she picked ‘no’, the game would prompt ‘Are you sure?’. Then it would loop! Haha,” — says the romantic.
In the end, she said “yes”.
“Her reaction was worth the months of development,” — Nielsen concluded.
