Sony has refocused on the entertainment industry: the company is now working on more adaptations of its gaming franchises than on new projects for PlayStation, according to Tech4Gamers journalist Shahir Zahid.
In recent years, Sony has delighted players with hits like God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel's Spider-Man 2. However, the company’s current game lineup raises questions. With current plans for three exclusive projects for PS5 — Marvel's Wolverine, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and Ghost of Yotei — Sony clearly lags behind Xbox, which has more games in development.
Instead, Sony is betting on adaptations. Numerous projects were announced at CES, and several are currently in the works: a movie based on Helldivers 2, an anime series and a movie based on Ghost of Tsushima, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, as well as the second season of the series The Last of Us. On the horizon are adaptations of Gravity Rush and Until Dawn, sequels to Uncharted and Gran Turismo, as well as the long-awaited God of War series for Prime Video. However, some projects, such as the Days Gone movie, are stuck in production hell.
This strategy is drawing mixed reactions from fans. Zahid stresses that exclusive games have always been PlayStation’s strong suit. A decline in their number could weaken the PS5’s position in the market. This is especially critical now that Sony has launched the PS5 Pro but cannot yet offer worthwhile projects to showcase its capabilities.
Zahid concludes that Sony can turn the situation around if it showcases new games at upcoming showcases. For now, however, the company clearly prioritizes the movie industry over gamers.
