Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy XIV, has expressed doubt about the need for the early release of next-generation consoles — PlayStation 6 and the new Xbox.
In an interview with Feed4Gamer, he noted that from a gamer's point of view, the current systems are coping with their tasks, and the devices themselves remain an expensive pleasure.
«When I look at things from a gamer's perspective, I feel there's no real need to put out new consoles, because right now people are happy with the Xbox Series X, PS5, or Switch 2. And honestly, from a gamer's perspective, new devices are just expensive to buy».
At the same time, as a producer and developer, Yoshida considers new platforms important for expanding the audience.
«My goal is to provide Final Fantasy XIV to as many players as possible. Therefore, if the number of platforms increases, we will work on releasing the game on them. Modern consoles have high performance, and it is easier for us to work with them than before».
Meanwhile, the industry is already actively discussing the possible features of the next generation. According to rumors, Sony is preparing a system with a tenfold increase in performance for ray tracing, and Microsoft is considering a modular design with PC design elements. However, all this information remains at the level of rumors, and the release of PlayStation 6 is expected no earlier than the end of 2027 or 2028.
