"The Conjuring 4" was positioned as the conclusion to the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, but Warner Bros. appears to have revised its plans after the phenomenal success of the latest film.
After "The Conjuring 4: The Last Rites" set a new record for box office receipts in its opening weekend among all horror films in history, Warner Bros. decided not to close the profitable franchise.
According to Puck News, the studio is already discussing creating a prequel - despite the fact that the latest film was originally positioned as the finale of the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
As a reminder, "The Last Rites" was released on September 5 and grossed $194 million worldwide in its first three days, breaking the record of "It" from 2017, which held the lead in the genre with $190 million over the same period. Moreover, the film has not yet been released in all countries - for example, the Russian premiere will take place on September 11.
However, the potential prequel may face problems as early as the announcement stage. One of the key architects of the franchise, producer James Wan, may leave the project. According to insiders, Wan is demanding a pay raise, but the studio has not yet agreed to it - and in case of refusal, he is ready to leave the project.
The "Conjuring" franchise started in 2013 with James Wan's eponymous film. The plot centers on the investigations of the married couple Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), specialists in paranormal phenomena. Since then, three sequels and several spin-offs have been released, dedicated to the demonic entities encountered by the characters.
To date, it is the highest-grossing horror franchise in history: in 12 years, "The Conjuring" has grossed $2.4 billion at the global box office.
