Illumination and Nintendo have officially announced a sequel to the animated hit "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. The new project is titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and will be released internationally on April 3, 2026.

As the title suggests, the sequel is inspired by the game Super Mario Galaxy, released in 2007 exclusively for the Wii. In it, Mario embarks on an intergalactic adventure to save Princess Peach.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said that the team is "striving to create a film that earns its place in Mario's 40-year history". According to him, Super Mario Galaxy will be the creative foundation, but the film will have many references to the entire franchise. The directors of the first film, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, are involved in the creation, as well as composer Brian Tyler, who will once again adapt musical themes from Nintendo games.

Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) will return to voice the characters. Jack Black's participation has also been confirmed, and he will once again play Bowser.
