The new film in the «Demon Slayer» universe continues to show strong results. After a successful start in Japan, the film was released internationally and has already set a number of records.
The animated film «Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle» grossed $132.1 million in its opening weekend in international release — the best start for anime outside of Japan and a new record for the genre.
According to Sony and Crunchyroll, the weekend's box office in the US was $70 million — more than any other anime for its entire run. For comparison, «Mugen Train» earned a total of $49.5 million in the US. Thus, «Infinity Castle» has already become the highest-grossing anime debut and the highest-grossing anime in the history of the American box office. This refers to nominal figures, without taking inflation into account.
The film also showed strong results in other regions: $29 million in Latin America, $17.4 million in Europe, $6 million in the Middle East, $5.2 million in India and $3.2 million in Australia. At the end of the weekend, the film set records among anime releases in the USA, India, Australia and Latin American countries.
Taking into account the data from the previous week, when the film had already grossed over $282 million in Japan and a number of Asian countries, the total worldwide box office of «Infinity Castle» exceeded $414 million. At the same time, data for Japan, South Korea and Taiwan will be updated on Monday. And in some countries, including Russia, the release will start only on September 18.
Given the current dynamics, the film has every chance to surpass the previous franchise record — $507 million grossed by «Mugen Train» — and become the highest-grossing anime in history.
