Qualcomm has confirmed the official name of its new flagship mobile processor — Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The full presentation of the chip will take place at the end of September at the annual Snapdragon Summit, which will be held in Hawaii. The first devices with the new processor will be smartphones of the Xiaomi 17 series, which are expected to be released in October.
The company explained that the number "5" in the name indicates the fifth generation of the flagship Snapdragon 8 line. The internal numbering is as follows: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3, then 8 Elite (conditional Gen 4) — and now Gen 5. According to Qualcomm, this approach should simplify navigation through chip generations for both users and partners. According to unofficial data, the abandonment of the "four" is also associated with cultural characteristics: in China and a number of Asian countries, the number 4 is considered unlucky.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will be manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process technology and will receive custom Oryon cores — Qualcomm's own design architecture, previously used in chips for PCs. According to leaks from China, the new processor scores up to 4.4 million points in AnTuTu (v11) and may be 58% ahead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the updated benchmark.
Xiaomi was the first to confirm support for the new chip. The company will skip the Xiaomi 16 generation and immediately move on to the Xiaomi 17 series — to emphasize direct competition with the iPhone 17. The lineup will include Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models. Their presentation is expected at the end of September — soon after, or possibly simultaneously with the official announcement of the processor.
