The company did not specify that the device's huge profitability is largely due to the overall increase in the cost of games and content.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has dubbed the PlayStation 5 its most successful game console in the company's history. The announcement was made by co-leader of the company Hideaki Nishino during the Tokyo Game Show 2025.
During the presentation, Nishino presented a diagram comparing revenues from all generations of PlayStation. According to the data, PS5 brought in $136 billion, surpassing all previous consoles: PlayStation 4 with $107 billion, PS3 with $71 billion, PS2 with $44 billion, and the original PlayStation with $24 billion. The indicated amount for PS5 includes forecasts for the current financial year.
In an interview with Famitsu in 2024, Nishino emphasized Sony's commitment to traditional home consoles. Despite rumors of a shift to cloud technologies, he noted that PS4 and PS5 continue to demonstrate high user engagement, and hardware remains the foundation of the company's gaming business.
