The company did not specify that the huge profitability of the device largely consists of a general increase in the cost of games and content.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has dubbed PlayStation 5 its most successful game console in the company's history. The statement was made by co-leader of the company Hideaki Nishino during Tokyo Game Show 2025.
During the presentation, Nishino presented a diagram comparing revenues from all generations of PlayStation. According to the data, PS5 brought in $136 billion, ahead of all previous consoles: PlayStation 4 with $107 billion, PS3 with $71 billion, PS2 with $44 billion, and the original PlayStation with $24 billion. The indicated amount for PS5 includes forecasts for the current financial year.
In an interview with Famitsu in 2024, Nishino emphasized Sony's commitment to traditional home consoles. Despite rumors of a shift to cloud technologies, he noted that PS4 and PS5 continue to demonstrate high user engagement, and hardware remains the foundation of the company's gaming business.
