In an interview with JP Games, Naoki Hamaguchi, who held leadership positions while working on Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, commented on Square Enix's decision to release Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on a key card and the criticism of this format.
Hamaguchi noted that he is aware of the players' dissatisfaction, but explained that contrary to some opinions, key cards are used not only to save on cartridges or to bypass the 64 GB limit. The main reason for their use is the limitation of data reading speed from the cartridge, which makes digital downloading more efficient.
The release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on Switch 2 will take place on January 22, 2026.
