Morgan Park believes that Black Ops 7 "broke" Call of Duty.
PC Gamer journalist Morgan Park released an article in which he heavily criticized the Call of Duty Next presentation, calling it a parade of "the worst that Call of Duty has to offer".
In between behind-the-scenes commercials for Little Caesars Pizza, AMD, Monster Energy, and Herman Miller chairs, we were treated to Black Ops 7 multiplayer with live commentary that ranged from a 3 AM infomercial to awkward conversations about gameplay that could easily be mistaken for the latest games in the series.
Morgan Park notes that no one looked genuine. Everyone — even the hosts — were simply going through the motions at the event, trying to record gameplay for broadcasts and unconvincingly feigning excitement about what they were seeing.
Park is also surprised that the usual strategy for generating interest around a new Call of Duty has stopped working with Black Ops 7. Activision put Black Ops in the title, added a zombie mode and grind, and expanded the arsenal, but people are still calling the new game "Black Ops 6 in a new wrapper".
Perhaps this is a sign that Call of Duty—or, more accurately, the machine that churns out a clone of the previous Call of Duty every 12 months—has started to malfunction. Perhaps two Black Ops in a row immediately after two Modern Warfares have finally broken Call of Duty.
