Many fans appreciate Clair Obscur for its simplicity and respect for their time. The absence of an "AAA budget" helped the studio focus on the key elements that players enjoy. The game Sandfall received some of the best reviews of 2025 and became a serious contender for "Game of the Year."

According to the creative director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, an "AAA budget" would only spoil the game. It would force the project to expand in scope, and the game would lose its engaging nature.

Clair Obscur's budget was estimated at less than $30 million. In an interview, Guillaume Broche said that limited resources were a blessing: the game remains simple, without unnecessary digressions, and respects players' time.

"In a way, limitations help narrow the scope and focus the vision on key elements. Unlimited resources could make the game less engaging".

The game immediately immerses you in the story, without unnecessary filler. If Sandfall had unlimited resources, Clair Obscur might not have been so successful. A high budget often increases the scale, but does not always make the experience more interesting - sometimes it becomes mediocre. In the current industry, large budgets lead to project cancellations and studio closures, so many teams are returning to more manageable finances.
