Silent Hill f producer Motoi Okamoto stated that the video game industry will stop evolving if large companies with big budgets don't start taking risks. According to him, risk is the key to innovation, and fear of failure makes the market homogeneous and predictable.
Okamoto noted that today, independent and AA developers often outperform AAA projects in sales because they are willing to take bold steps. Meanwhile, major publishers avoid experiments, as the cost of a single game can exceed hundreds of millions of dollars, and the slightest mistake damages the company's image.
On his social media page, he said that independent studios often use player reactions to teasers and trailers to understand whether to release a project. But major publishers cannot afford this - the price of reputation is too high.
Okamoto appealed to young developers to persuade their managers to try new things. He understands that newcomers have little influence, but believes that experienced professionals have a responsibility to take on such responsibility.
"It's important not only to talk, but also to invest money in your words."
His words are confirmed by Silent Hill f: the series has been moved to Japan for the first time, uses an unusual combat system, and has received positive reviews. Okamoto is confident that the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Hollow Knight proves that players are no longer willing to pay for monotonous projects.
