At the "Mortal Kombat 2" panel held as part of New York Comic Con, screenwriter Jeremy Slater announced that New Line and Warner Bros. have already given the green light to the third installment of the film adaptation. According to him, he will write the script for the threequel again. The team has not shared any other details yet, so the main focus of the panel was on the upcoming sequel.

Simon McQuoid, who directed the 2021 reboot, has returned to the director's chair for the second part. Most of the cast will also return to their roles. Among the new faces are Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Marty Ford as Shao Kahn.

Initially, "Mortal Kombat 2" was scheduled for release on October 24, 2025, but the release was postponed to May 15, 2026. According to industry sources, one of the reasons for the postponement was the success of "Superman" and other Warner Bros. films released in 2025. The studio had already made enough from its key projects and did not need to release another blockbuster in the same year, so it moved "Mortal Kombat 2" to the 2026 release schedule.

Such an early announcement of the threequel only confirms this version, showing that the postponement is not related to production problems, but to a planned redistribution of releases.
