Laurence Fishburne spoke about the possibility of playing Morpheus again in \"The Matrix 5\". Speaking at Comic Con 2025 in New York, the actor stated that he was ready to consider participating in the new part of the franchise, but only under certain conditions.
\"It all depends on how good the film is. If it's great and if it makes sense - then yes, I would come back. But I don't know if it makes sense.\"
These words were spoken a year and a half after Warner Bros. officially announced the fifth part of \"The Matrix\". In April 2024, the studio announced that Drew Goddard (\"The Martian\") became the director and screenwriter of the project, and the Wachowskis themselves are not participating in the film.
Fishburne in his time became one of the symbols of the original trilogy, but did not appear in the fourth part - \"The Matrix: Resurrections\". He also commented on this fact during the festival, noting that he personally contacted Lana Wachowski with a proposal to return, but received only the answer: \"I'll think about it\". After that, according to the actor, the conversation did not continue, and the role of young Morpheus was played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
During the conversation, which was conducted by journalist Josh Horowitz, Fishburne and his colleague Joe Pantoliano also discussed the impact of \"The Matrix\" on the industry.
\"There is not a single film after \"The Matrix\" - whether it's a science fiction action movie or a fantasy - that it would not have influenced,\" the actor noted. According to him, even the Marvel cinematic universe \"would look different\" if not for the influence of the cult trilogy.
There are no details about \"The Matrix 5\" yet, but the project, apparently, remains in development. Warner Bros. has not reported its cancellation.
