Director Simon McQuoid explained for the first time why the sequel's release was moved to spring 2026.
The release of «Mortal Kombat 2» has been postponed from October 24, 2025 to May 15, 2026. Until now, the reasons have not been officially announced, but there were rumors in the industry that Warner Bros. simply did not need additional income in 2025 - the year turned out to be profitable, including thanks to «Superman» and other successful projects. Now the situation has been commented on by director Simon McQuoid himself.
During a panel at Comic Con in New York, he confirmed the new release date and stated that the film became a «victim of its own success». According to him, the first «Mortal Kombat» unexpectedly took off on digital platforms, and this inspired the studio to expand the scale of the sequel. «With each view [of the original], this film became bigger and bigger. In the end, we created a huge summer blockbuster, and we can be proud of that», he noted.
According to the director, there will be twice as many fights in the sequel, and the structure of the tournament will form the basis for the development of all key storylines. At the same time, McQuoid already has ideas for a sequel - he previously confirmed that Warner Bros. officially gave the «green light» to the third film.
