There are constant discussions around the Battlefield series about whether it will be able to bypass Call of Duty this year, but initially Battlefield's goals were completely different.
In an interview, DICE Senior Producer David Sirland noted that Battlefield was originally conceived as a niche shooter.
"When I started, Battlefield was a niche within a niche, almost like Dungeons & Dragons among shooters. I think Battlefield has lasted this long because the core experience was originally hugely ambitious," added Jeremy Chubb, DICE producer.
The franchise has come a long way since its humble beginnings, but the same can be said for its main competitor, Call of Duty. Vince Zampella, the current head of Battlefield and founder of Infinity Ward, said about the emergence of Call of Duty.
"The only reason Call of Duty exists is because EA was acting awful," he recalls, explaining how he left EA over a dispute over Medal of Honor more than 20 years ago.
