Complex relations between Marvel and Universal hinder the creation of a solo Hulk film.
Mark Ruffalo, who has played the Hulk since 2012, admitted that the prospects for a separate film about his character remain dim. In an interview with GQ magazine, the actor noted that despite years of talk about the project, the rights to the character still belong to Universal Pictures, not Marvel Studios.
«I would love to star in a solo Hulk movie. But, if you know the history, the rights belong not to Marvel, but to Universal. I'm not sure that will ever happen, honestly. We're discussing different ideas of what it could be, but so far it's all talk».
Ruffalo added that, in his opinion, the audience might be interested in such a project if Marvel managed to «find the right approach». However, legal restrictions do not allow the studio to launch production.
The last time a film dedicated to the Hulk was released was in 2008 — it was «The Incredible Hulk» with Edward Norton. Since then, the character has only appeared in crossovers and team-up films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — from «The Avengers» (2012) to the series «She-Hulk» (2022).
While a separate film remains in question, Ruffalo will once again try on the image of Bruce Banner in the film «Spider-Man: A New Day» — the fourth solo Spider-Man film with Tom Holland. Filming of the project continues in London, and fresh shots from the set finally confirmed the actor's participation, who had previously repeatedly evaded a direct answer.
The premiere of «Spider-Man: A New Day» will take place in cinemas on July 31, 2026.
