A few hours before the publication of Microsoft's quarterly financial report, its Azure cloud platform experienced a major failure affecting millions of users.
According to the company, the reason was an «unintentional configuration change» in the Azure Front Door (AFD) service. Microsoft has already blocked all changes to AFD, including custom ones, and is rolling back the settings to the latest stable version.
The failure affected many services. The game The Outer Worlds 2, released today, is temporarily unavailable on Xbox platforms due to problems with Azure, Obsidian Entertainment reported. The Minecraft website is experiencing intermittent operation — access appears and disappears, with noticeable delays.
Azure occupies 23% of the cloud infrastructure market, second only to AWS with 32%. This is the second major incident in a week: recently, a similar failure in AWS was caused by a software error. Experts warn that dependence on one giant cloud service provider carries serious risks.
