From the point of view of game statistics, a bayonet kill and a shot are two different indicators. The developers decided to focus on shooting, since this is the most popular way to use this weapon model (this "threw out" kills made in close combat).
Due to the peculiarities of counting, it is definitely difficult to say whether the community coped with the task, given the "lost" kills.
The Helldivers 2 team found a way out: the commemorative cape "True Ideology" was simply given to all players.
