A new wave of changes is brewing in the Doctor Who universe.
Doctor Who creator Russell T. Davies has revealed that in the upcoming spin-off "The War Between Land and Sea," the Sea Devils race will be renamed Homo Aqua. According to the showrunner, viewers will "soon realize that calling them Sea Devils is racist." Davies added that the public should not perceive these creatures as monsters, because in the upcoming series, humans will be the villains.
The five-part mini-series will be released in December and will tell the story of the confrontation between humanity and the underwater civilization of Homo Aqua. The plot focuses on negotiator Barkley (Russell Tovey), who finds himself caught between two fires: the UNIT unit led by Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and the leader of Homo Aqua named Salt (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). The conflict flares up after the underwater inhabitants declare war on humanity because of ocean pollution. The project is positioned as a science fiction interpretation of the theme of climate change.
Despite the connection with the canon, the appearance of the Doctor himself in the series is not planned. The exact release date has not yet been announced, but Davies previously called the project a "Christmas gift," which hints at a premiere at the end of December.
