Some characters who survived the events of the books failed to keep their lives in the series version.

Lauren Hissrich, showrunner of Netflix's \"The Witcher\" series, commented on the deaths of several characters who remained alive in Andrzej Sapkowski's books.
According to Hissrich, one of the reasons for these changes was the actors' schedules.
\"Not every actor is available to us on an exclusive basis, so sometimes they are already busy with other projects when we need them. Scheduling in television production is the most difficult 'Tetris' in the world: you have to take into account the schedules of actors, directors, the availability of locations, the readiness of filming locations, and much more. It's a miracle that anything gets filmed at all! Sometimes we have to 'kill off' or write off a character simply because the actor is busy somewhere else.\"
The first comment, as Redanian Intelligence suggests, concerns Keira Metz and Istredd, who spent only a few days on set and received minimal screen time.
Speaking about Vesemir's death, Hissrich emphasized that this twist was not conceived for shock value, but was intended to influence the development and motivation of other characters - in particular, Geralt, who learns about the mentor's death in the fifth season. A similar fate befell Margarita Laux-Antille.
\"If we killed characters that Yennefer didn't directly interact with, it wouldn't have the same weight. It wouldn't move her forward as much. Margarita's death is a huge loss for Yennefer and for the Lodge. It changes how Yennefer behaves for the rest of the episode and the entire season, intensifying her anger and determination. After that, she is more eager than ever for Vilgefortz to pay for his crimes - for him to die.\"
The fourth season of \"The Witcher\" was released on October 30, 2025, and showed the worst results among the main seasons - both in terms of views on the platform and in terms of critics' and viewers' ratings. Filming for the fifth season has already been completed, and its premiere is expected in 2026.
