Gamers Nexus discussed the Steam Machine's front panel, which is attached with magnets, and the possibility of 3D printing custom covers. The panel can be decorated with graphic designs, improve cooling, and Valve is testing a version with an E-ink display in a frame.
Although such a panel will not be officially sold, technically savvy users will be able to create their own versions, possibly even sell them. The display shows current GPU and CPU temperatures, fan speeds, and other metrics — a convenient and stylish feature.
Other Steam Machine customization options are expected, including a full Companion Cube (from Portal) skin from Dbrand, which will be released next year. This is a new shell for the entire device, not just the front panel.
These features will help those who find the standard Steam Machine boring.
The main question remains the price. The experience with the original Steam Machine was unsuccessful, but the current state of SteamOS and Linux compatibility gives hope that the new version will avoid the mistakes of the past.
