Metroid could become one of the next chapters in Nintendo's evolving cinematic universe.

Reports have surfaced online about a possible expansion of the emerging Nintendo cinematic universe. According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, Universal is in talks to acquire the rights to produce a Metroid film, which could become part of the so-called Mario Cinematic Universe.

Attempts to adapt Metroid have been made before. In the early 2000s, the project was in development at Lion Rock Productions, with John Woo slated to direct. The plot involved a story about Samus Aran's first missions and her confrontation with Mother Brain. In 2007, the project was shut down because Nintendo was not ready to hand over control of the heroine's backstory to external studios.

Since then, Metroid has regularly been named one of the most desired adaptations. Former UFC champion Ronda Rousey has said she "dreams of playing Samus," as has Brie Larson, who has repeatedly confessed her love for the franchise and even dressed up as Samus for Halloween. "Kong: Skull Island" director Jordan Vogt-Roberts claimed that he "has a crazy Metroid movie idea, but Nintendo is unlikely to allow it." And Neill Blomkamp, the author of "District 9", when asked about his interest in the project, replied with a short "yes."

Universal and Nintendo have not yet commented on the rumors. Nevertheless, this is not the first mention of Metroid in recent months in the context of plans to expand the Nintendo cinematic universe after 2027, when the adaptation of The Legend of Zelda will be released.
