Yacht Club Games hopes the project will sell 500,000 copies.
Shovel Knight developers Yacht Club Games admitted in a conversation with Bloomberg that their next project, Mina the Hollower, will be decisive for the company's future.
If the game sells around 500,000 copies, the studio will be safe. 200,000 is an acceptable result. But if sales do not exceed 100,000, it could become a serious problem, says studio co-founder Sean Velasco.
Last month, the release of Mina the Hollower was postponed indefinitely. As Schreier found out, the game remained in an extremely raw state until recently: only in recent weeks have the developers been able to complete all the content from beginning to end for the first time. In the process, a lot of shortcomings were discovered that still need to be corrected.
The studio has already experienced cuts and now has only 15 employees. Schreier describes Yacht Club Games' financial situation as «extremely difficult». Maintaining independence directly depends on the commercial success of Mina the Hollower.
