Currently, Epic Games is actively developing Fortnite and the modern Unreal Engine, but some shooter fans would like to see projects based on Unreal Tournament.
Modders are supporting the franchise, offering various remasters and more. Recently, the OldUnreal fan community in Discord* announced that they had received approval from Epic Games — the copyright holder has allowed the revival of Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT 2004):
[...] we are going to publish an installer that will download the original UT2004 disc image, install the game, and apply patches to it. We will also start releasing updates that modernize the game, ensure compatibility with Windows Vista and newer, Linux x86-64 and aarch64 (e.g., Raspberry Pi and similar devices), and macOS 10.9 and newer. In addition, they will fix bugs and add improvements. Yes, you understood correctly: UT2004 will soon be available for download again. For free.
Unreal Tournament 2004 will work on modern systems, and modders will eliminate various bugs — a list of fixes and improvements has been published.
