Microsoft continues its collaboration with 11 bit studios. The new title, Death Howl, has received high marks on PC and is preparing for release on consoles.
Today, December 9, the game became available on PC Game Pass. This is a dark project from The Outer Zone studio, published by 11 bit studios — the creators of Frostpunk and The Alters. The game was released without a major advertising campaign but quickly attracted the attention of players and reviewers.
The developers have confirmed that the project was initially created as multiplatform. On February 19, 2026, it will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. On the same day, the game will also appear on Xbox Game Pass.
The PC version received an average score of 84%. Among the reviews, there are also extremely positive ones. An XboxEra journalist called it "one of the best games of 2025."
Reviewers praise the card-based soulslike for its atmosphere, visual effects, and presentation, which enhances the story of a mother trying to get her son back. They note the combination of card mechanics with soulslike elements, the workings of the card and totem development system, the well-constructed world, and the high level of difficulty, which encourages experimentation with decks.
Critics point to issues with balance, repetitiveness associated with the "roguelike" format, and an unattractive presentation. They also note the lack of improvements that could make long sessions more comfortable. The narrative, while interesting, sometimes loses its pace.
The project is suitable for those who appreciate a dark atmosphere, card strategy, and a demanding combat system.
