Some embarked on a journey to personally examine the statue.
The Game Awards 2025 host Geoff Keighley posted a photo of the statue on social media before the event, sparking numerous theories in the gaming community.
It was later revealed that the creators of Baldur's Gate 3 were behind it, presenting the Divinity project at TGA 2025.
Larian Studios Publishing Director Michael Douse shared on social media that the statue is called Hellstone, and explained why the decision was made to install it:
We are moving further and further away from the real, physical world, so we wanted to create not just a statue around which international teams could gather, but also a place that could unite the entire gaming community. We wanted people to feel the excitement again in anticipation of the next big game - and at the same time, we did it through craftsmanship and manual labor to encourage [players] to go outside, see everything with their own eyes, and talk about it. Many thought it was created by artificial intelligence or that it was a "render on UE5." In the current environment, of course, expectations are low. [...] We at Larian will continue to invest in remaining "tangible": being close, being visible, and being open - to an audience that is clearly excited and engaged.
