Gears of War Returns to Its Roots: Developers Call E-Day the Most Ambitious Project in the Series
The Coalition team, with the support of Sumo and Disbelief studios, thanked fans after the release of Gears of War: Reloaded. "Thank you for playing with us!" the developers said.
In 2026, the series will celebrate its 20th anniversary, and the main event of the anniversary will be Gears of War: E-Day. The Coalition calls the project the most ambitious in the history of the franchise. The game is being created from scratch on Unreal Engine 5 and will receive an updated visual part and redesigned gameplay.
Gears of War: E-Day will return players to the beginning of the story — to the first clash between Marcus and Dom with the Locust. The studio notes that this is a convenient entry point for new players, and promises to reveal additional details later.
Next year will be the 20th anniversary of Gears of War, and we can't imagine a better way to celebrate it than with the release of Gears of War: E-Day. This is our most ambitious project to date, built from the ground up on Unreal Engine 5 so you can feel like you're part of Gears and play in a new way. It's a return to our roots — Marcus and Dom face the Locust for the first time. This is the best place to get acquainted with the Gears universe, and we look forward to sharing more next year.
