In 2021, the French studio Cyber Group Studios announced that it was working on an animated series based on Final Fantasy IX. After the company closed in 2025, it seemed to many that the project had sunk into oblivion. However, the latest issue of the French magazine Écran Total confirms that the series continues to live, but its production is now being handled by Euro Visual.
It is reported that the release is scheduled for 2028. The project will not be a direct adaptation of the game: the action will unfold in the same universe, but some time after the events of the original. The series is aimed at a children's audience aged 6 to 13 and will consist of 13 episodes lasting 22 minutes.
The plot focuses on characters named Mel, Colm, Luciola, Thea, Fala and Doc - the children of Vivi, one of the heroes of Final Fantasy IX. According to the description, they are the last black mages of the four continents and live in Alexandria under the protection of its inhabitants. The idyll is broken when Colm finds Mel frozen, like a statue, in the tavern where she works. This moment directly refers to the lore of the original game, according to which most black mages live only about a year, after which they freeze forever.
At the same time, confirmation of the development of the animated series does not clarify the fate of a possible remake of Final Fantasy IX. Information about it previously appeared in a leak from the Nvidia GeForce Now service, after which messages about the freezing or possible cancellation of the project began to circulate online.
