The Avatar sequel continues to dominate the global box office.
In less than two weeks after its premiere, the film «Avatar: Flame and Ash» grossed $760.4 million worldwide, cementing its status as one of the highest-grossing releases of 2025. The film was released on December 19 and, based on the results of two weekends, confidently took second place in terms of box office receipts among all releases of the year, second only to «Zootopia 2», which started on November 26 and has so far grossed $1.28 billion worldwide.
Nevertheless, the sequel's start was weaker than the previous installment. «The Way of Water» earned over $900 million over the same period. James Cameron previously admitted that the market has changed: after the COVID-19 pandemic, viewers began to go to the cinema less often and increasingly prefer streaming services to a traditional trip to the cinema.
At the same time, the director is confident that «Flame and Ash» will eventually make a profit. The only question remains whether this amount will be enough to launch the fourth and fifth films into full production. Their premieres are tentatively scheduled for December 21, 2029 and December 19, 2031, respectively.
Although part of the material for «Avatar 4» was filmed in parallel with the production of the sequel, Cameron does not rule out that in case of failure he may abandon further continuation and limit himself to a public story about how he sees the ending of the whole story.
