GameStop plans to close up to 400 of its retail stores in the US, Canada, and Europe in fiscal year 2026. The company explains the decision by declining sales of physical copies of games and a desire to reduce costs.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, it was stated that GameStop will also pay CEO Ryan Cohen up to $35 billion in stock options if he can increase the company's capitalization to $100 billion.

Since the stock surge in 2021, GameStop has struggled to adapt to digital platforms like Steam, Xbox Store, and PlayStation Store. Attempts to develop NFTs and a crypto wallet have not brought growth.

According to the company, the convenience of online stores makes physical locations partially obsolete. The closure will affect many regions, but the exact list of stores has not yet been published.
