"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" Could Be Longer Than "Game of Thrones" - George Martin "Threw" Material to Creators
The prequel series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" could become HBO's longest project in the Westeros universe.
Showrunner Ira Parker told The National that George R. R. Martin gave the writing team "about ten to twelve" sketches of future stories about the adventures of Dunk and Egg. Each of these drafts could potentially form the basis of a separate season.
"He shared with me about 10-12 more drafts of books and stories that tell about Dunk and Egg throughout their lives."
According to the showrunner, the team is currently focused on the first season, but is already working on the second in parallel. HBO intends to see the audience's reaction before deciding on a further extension of the series.
I like writing in this world in which events unfold. This is a wonderful story, and I hope we get a chance to tell as many stories as possible."
Even if Martin doesn't have time to finish the "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" cycle, HBO already has a head start for years to come. However, this is precisely what worries fans. The original literary cycle includes only three novellas - "The Hedge Knight", "The Sworn Sword" and "The Mystery Knight".
Given that each season is planned to cover one novella, HBO only has three complete stories in store. Thus, by the fourth season, the team risks being left without source material - and then Martin's sketches will be used. Against this background, fans recall the finale of "Game of Thrones", created without a literary basis, and express doubts whether the studio will be able to complete the story with dignity.
Nevertheless, even the release of three seasons will take several years, and by that time George Martin may return to work on the stories about Dunk and Egg - as he recently hinted in aninterview.
