New GOG Owner Plans to Weaken Steam's Monopoly. How?
In an interview, he stated:
The dominance of the giant is more of an opportunity than a barrier for me.
According to him, holding about 80% of the market is extremely difficult in a dynamic and competitive environment. Steam, as a "Goliath," cannot simultaneously control all directions, and a huge audience makes the platform vulnerable to competitors' innovations. Smaller players should look for weaknesses in the leader's offering.
Kiciński noted that Steam wins due to its reliability and convenience, remaining the primary platform for millions of users. To compete with Valve, GOG must not only improve the technical side of the store but also strengthen its strengths-archiving classics and the absence of DRM, which is the foundation of the platform's philosophy.
Despite the experience of the Epic Games Store, which showed how difficult it is to compete with Steam, Kiciński remains optimistic. He is confident that focusing on players who value real ownership of games and access to classics will allow GOG to weaken Valve's monopoly in 2026.
