George R. R. Martin has confirmed that the second season of the series \"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms\" is already in development. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the author said that the sequel will be based on his second novella in the cycle — \"The Sworn Sword,\" and also shared plans to write new stories about the adventures of Dunk and Egg.
\"The main problem is that I only have three novellas. And in my head, there are dozens of stories about Dunk and Egg. They need to be written down at last. Last year I started two new ones: one takes place in Winterfell, the other in the Riverlands.\"
According to long-standing leaks, the fourth story may be called \"The She-Wolves of Winterfell,\" and the fifth — \"The Village Hero,\" but the author himself does not confirm this information. It is also unclear when exactly he plans to finish the new texts — before the completion of \"The Winds of Winter\" or after.
Earlier it became known that Martin passed about a dozen draft sketches of stories about Dunk and Egg to the showrunner of the series, Ira Parker. Then it was reported that the writer intends to return to the full-fledged writing of new stories only after the completion of \"The Winds of Winter.\"
However, in the current THR interview, Martin speaks about the need to finish \"new stories and other things\" before he can finish the novel. This creates confusion: it is not specified which texts are meant — the two new stories started last year, or the draft materials already transferred to HBO.
The first season of the series, which will premiere on January 18, is based on \"The Hedge Knight\" — the first novella in the cycle. In it, Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg go to a knightly tournament in search of glory and fortune.
The show has already received a warm reception from critics, earning a \"fresh certificate\" on Rotten Tomatoes with a rating of 87%. The decision to extend for a third season will depend on the reaction of the audience.
