The Hollywood Reporter reported on a new HBO project that will take place three centuries before the events of "Game of Thrones." According to sources, the studio is developing a prequel dedicated to the conquest of Westeros by Aegon I Targaryen, the first king of the united Seven Kingdoms.
The project is being discussed in two formats at once: as a television series and as a large-scale feature-length saga, comparable in scope and tone to Denis Villeneuve's "Dune." The idea is of particular interest to HBO and Warner Bros., which are said to be considering developing the George R. R. Martin universe not only in a serial, but also in a film format.
The plot of the prequel will focus on Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives — Visenya and Rhaenys. All three were dragon riders, and their invasion of Westeros marked the beginning of the era of Targaryen rule.
As with the potential sequel to "Game of Thrones" about Arya Stark, the project is still in the early stages of development, and there are almost no details about it.
