Animated film "SpongeBob's Search for SquarePants" is now available for home viewing
Along with the digital release, the authors presented bonus materials featuring the pirate ghost Barb.
The animated film "SpongeBob's Search for SquarePants" has been released in digital format. This is the fourth full-length story about SpongeBob and the sixth film in the expanded "Bikini Bottom" cinematic universe. The film premiered worldwide on December 19, 2025.
According to the plot, SpongeBob SquarePants decides to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs, but, traditionally, this attempt turns into a disaster: the hero accidentally summons the legendary Flying Dutchman. Together with Patrick, he embarks on a chaotic journey through the underwater world of spirits, where he encounters not only dangers, but also his own understanding of what true courage is.
The film offers the franchise's usual mix of absurd humor, bright animation, and light madness. Critics generally received the film warmly: it has 82% "freshness" on Rotten Tomatoes, although the audience rating is noticeably lower — 68%.
Reviewers note that the new installment is "pleasant, though not as crazy as the early episodes of the series", and The Guardian even called the film "the funniest film in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' series."
At the same time, some viewers call the film "the best SpongeBob movie", praising the pirate theme, while the main criticism boils down to the fact that it is still "a film primarily for children".
The digital edition includes additional materials: deleted scenes, director's commentary, and a documentary mini-film about the creation of underwater scenery and music recordings. One of the bonuses was shared by ComingSoon, which published a video in which Regina Hall talks about voicing the new character — the pirate ghost Barb.
