Viggo Mortensen Will Not Return in "The Hunt for Gollum" - Fans Suggest Replacing Him with Henry Cavill
Not all actors from the original "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy will be able to participate in the new film.
According to Knight Edge Media, Viggo Mortensen will not return to the role of Aragorn in the film "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum." Against this background, discussions about a possible replacement immediately began in the fan community — one of the most popular options was Henry Cavill.
The reason was a fan image in which Cavill is presented in the classic image of a ranger. The image quickly spread across the network and collected hundreds of comments. Some viewers are sure that the actor would be perfect for the role and would be able to embody the character, while others are categorically against any replacement. However, things are unlikely to go beyond fantasies: Cavill himself is currently busy producing the remake of "Highlander," and his schedule overlaps with the production of "The Hunt for Gollum." So even theoretically, his participation looks unlikely.
Rumors about Mortensen's absence from the project have been circulating since the film was announced. Back in 2024, the actor said that he was ready to return to the role of Aragorn only if there was a really strong script. However, apparently, it's not just about that: one of the reasons for the refusal could be Mortensen's attitude to digital rejuvenation. Previously, the actor expressed doubts about the active use of computer graphics, whereas without it, it is almost impossible to realize the plot, which unfolds before the events of the original trilogy.
Who exactly will play Aragorn in the end is still unknown: casting is ongoing. The premiere of "The Hunt for Gollum" is scheduled for December 17, 2027. The film has already confirmed the return of Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Andy Serkis, who will once again play Gollum and simultaneously direct the film.
