Full-length "Chainsaw Man" and "Demon Slayer" to compete for the main animation prize of the Japan Academy Film Prize
The Japan Academy Film Prize has selected the top 5 full-length anime of 2025 to participate in the local "Oscars".
The nominees for the 49th Japan Academy Film Prize have been announced in Japan — one of the most prestigious awards in national cinema. In the category "Best Animated Film", "Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc" and "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training" will compete this year.
Along with them, "Hyaku En no Koi", "PELELIU Paradise in Hell" and "Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Pentagram" are also included in the shortlist.
Although "Demon Slayer" and "Chainsaw Man" are considered the main contenders for the award, "Hyaku En no Koi" is also regarded as a "dark horse" — the film has received critical acclaim for its visual elaboration. But the "Detective Conan" franchise is traditionally present among the nominees, but has never won in the years of participation.
The winners of the award will be announced on March 13 at a ceremony at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo.
