Difficult economic situation and rising RAM prices have pushed back the launch of PlayStation 6, analysts say
According to rumors, the console was supposed to appear on the market in 2027-2028.
Against the backdrop of a difficult economic situation and a sharp increase in RAM prices, PlayStation 6 may be delayed significantly longer than the expected 2027–2028 window.
MST Financial Senior Analyst David Gibson, assessing Sony's results for the third quarter of the current financial year, notes that the gaming division is likely to exceed market expectations due to strong sales of both its own and third-party games. In his opinion, this creates the conditions for extending the life cycle of PlayStation 5, and the release of PlayStation 6 will be «delayed more than many expected».
Although talk of a possible postponement of the start of the new generation is not the first time, the forecast from an authoritative analyst gives these rumors additional weight. At the same time, a scenario with a release in 2029–2030 or even later looks unusual for the industry: by this time, the current hardware of Sony and, probably, Microsoft may become noticeably outdated by market standards.
However, such a situation would not be unprecedented. Nintendo successfully launched Switch 2 only in 2025, later than expected and without advanced technologies. For Sony and Microsoft, a delay may be a less risky step than releasing new consoles at too high a price.
